[Poem] Unfinished

Cruel weather and harsh experiences
Took their toll on a vulnerable figure.
Where once was innocent laughter,
A block of ice and granite looms.
It is sculpted by rough touches,
And melted by warm words.
Time reveals its secret,
Removes the debris,
Exposes a core.
Deep within
Is found;
Freed;
Me;
I

Personal favourite for me... very well paced. Poetry is wordplay, but part of it is also voice and performance - done any recitals or performance work?

Is this the only place that graces your poetry or have you had any published?

Just poetry or prose too? And post some of your artwork also... don't have them lying around gathering dust, show them off.

The artwork that is.

Thanks Chris.

I haven't done any recitals or performance or had anything published. I've only recently worked up the courage to let other people read my stuff. So, the short answer is, this is the only place you will find anything written by me.

As for prose, there are random bits and pieces, but I'm not all that happy with them. What I have are mostly just practice pieces and warm ups or hideously extended going-no-where stories that need finishing. However, I have some academic papers in the pipe work for publishing and one online elsewhere.

The artwork thing is more tricky as at the moment I have precisely one painting I could put up... they just take so much more time than poetry :D Although I am working on one at the moment that should hopefully be finished within a few weekends.

This place could do with some colour.

Catch 22: confidence to let people see what you write, but you need to write to publish to get people to read it... go for it; I didn't expect the Big Issue to accept a story way-back when, but they did and it sort of paved the way for me... bite the bullet. :)

Academic? You've got an "ology"?

Of course, you need to convince an editor first, but there's a few small press magazines in print/online where you should find a home: look on www.ralan.com

As for the artwork, how about more of the "photo-manipulation"? Really like the subtle colour changes you make to black & white images, i.e. blue eyes, multi-coloured buttons on your hat. That's too much patience that I can handle - I'd end up throwing Photoshop off my hard-drive!

I think I'm taking what could be called baby steps as far as getting work 'out there' goes... start small and all that. There may well be some bullet-bitage at some point in the future, but at the moment I'm just trying to build on what I have until I reach a level where I feel I have a good footing to start thinking seriously about publishing. Blimey, that paragraph is just chock-full of metaphors.

I am indeed an academic, albeit part-time. I've just got my dissertation to do and then I'll have an MA in cultural and media studies. My focus is fan studies, and you can find one of my papers here: http://powerup.motime.com/archive/2005-09 (scroll down to the Texts as Toys entry and click on the link there). That paper serves as kind of an introduction to the one which will, all being well, be published in a game studies journal in January.

For the artwork, I don't really have much more than what I've posted on the SFX Forum, and that's all of me - not too interesting I think. It's something that I enjoy doing just for the fun of it really, to see what I can make happen. I was thinking about trying to create some art to go with my poems at some point, unless I try to find an illustrator. Other than that I have some fan art, but I don't think that really belongs on this blog.
